About Tacoma, WA

Tacoma, Washington had a population of 198,397 according to the 2010 census. The city serves as the center of the business activity for the area around the South Puget Sound area. However, Tacoma is probably best known for the Tacoma Narrows Bridge which collapsed in 1940 as the result of high winds. Although the bridge was known as Galloping Gertie because it swayed to and fro before its collapse, this bridge was rebuilt in 1950 and is now a very popular visitor attraction.
